Center for Public Health Practice & Research Receives 5-year Grant

Bettye Apenteng (PI), Sam Opoku, Linda Kimsey, Bill Mase, Angie Peden, and Charles will be funded by the GA Department of Community Health, State Office of Rural Health to provide the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Grant – Financial & Operational Program for Critical Access Hospitals for a five year grant period.  They just completed a four year FLEX project with the state and this is a 5 year expansion of that project. The total annual funding is $210,500/year for a 5 year project totaling $1,052,500 in external funding from the State Office of Rural Health.  

The project involves conducting at least 15 Critical Access Hospital financial assessments, facilitating organizational strategic planning for these hospitals, conducting stakeholder assessments, delivering technical assistance and training on rapid cycle approaches for data-driven operational improvement, and conducting workshops on effective leadership strategies for small rural hospitals. 

Hatchlings Break Records

Sea turtle nesting season on St. Catherine’s Island is anything but slow this summer according to researchers at Georgia Southern University.

Jaynie Gaskin, MPH, executive director of the Georgia Southern University Sea Turtle Program at St. Catherine’s Island (STP@SCI), said the team on the island predicted a record-breaking season this year, and that prediction is right on track. 

Center awarded Grant for Heart Rate Variability Study

The Biodynamics & Human Performance Center on Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus has been awarded an internal grant from the Faculty Research Committee in the amount of $9,965 for their project entitled “Heart Rate Variability: A Versatile Health Biomarker.”

Graduate students awarded sea grants

William Annis and Lauren Moniz were each awarded Graduate Research Traineeships worth more than $20,000 from the Georgia Sea Grant. The awards will support their marine biology research as they work toward completing their master’s degrees. 

Student Researcher as Snake Specialist in Honduras

Lauren Wilson, a graduate student in the Georgia Southern University Department of Biology, spent the summer working as a snake specialist in Central America. Wilson joined a research team tasked with quantifying and protecting biodiversity in the forests of Cusuco National Park in Honduras. The team was organized by the conservation research organization, Operation Wallacea.

Computational Research Technical Support is a specialized area of IT Services to build and support a comprehensive program to advance computational research at Georgia Southern University. That includes offering and supporting traditional high performance computing (HPC) systems, as well as systems for high throughput and data – intensive computing.

Two New Ticks

While most people tend to avoid ticks, Jackson Tomlinson, a graduate student in the Department of Biology finds them fascinating and beautiful. His interest in the parasites was recently rewarded with the discovery of two species of ticks that are entirely new to science.
