Educational Settings

Educational settings in which commonly-accepted normal educational practices are involved, including public and private school settings, publicly funded afterschool programs associated with school systems, the Boys and Girls Club of America, Parks and Recreation educational programming, and preschool / head start programs associated with schools, workshops conducted by Georgia Southern Faculty on a Georgia Southern Campus. (Note: Private preschool or daycare or camps are not included in this definition). 

  • Research conducted in normal educational settings with minor participants may not always qualify for exempt status.  Where the following definition applies, minimal risk research involving general population school aged minors will be reviewed under the expedited review process.  Expedited reviewers will retain the right to request full committee review where degree of risk is deemed greater than minimal or uncertain.
    • Definition- expedited category 7: Research on individual or group characteristics or behavior (including, but not limited to, research on perception, cognition, motivation, identity, language, communication, cultural beliefs or practices, and social behavior) or research employing survey, interview, oral history, focus group, program evaluation, human factors evaluation, or quality assurance methodologies.
  • Research conducted in normal educational settings or outside of educational settings with minor participants will most often be reviewed under fullboard review.
