Jim Williams, the Chair of the Advisory Council for the Center for Entrepreneurial Learning and Leadership hosted two more entrepreneurial guests in his classes on Tuesday November 11th.  Representative Butch Parrish and Delmus Mosley both from Swainsboro.  Both speakers shared their entrepreneurial experience with the students and what they had learned from this experience.  Representative Parrish also talked about the state of the economy and Georgia State policy making and how this was supporting entrepreneurs.  Delmus Mosley discussed the three key things he had learned about entrepreneurship: providing a quality product; avoiding talking negatively about your competitors; and, being prepared to work hard and be persistent.

About Representative Butch Parrish

Larry J. (Butch) Parrish was born in Swainsboro, Georgia and graduated from Swainsboro High School.  He attended the University of Georgia and was president of his senior class in Pharmacy School. He graduated in 1964 with a B.S. degree in Pharmacy and began practicing pharmacy in Swainsboro in 1965.

Butch is past president of the Swainsboro Exchange Club and the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce.  In 1977 he was chosen as one of the Five Outstanding Young Men in Georgia by the Georgia Jaycees. That same year he was selected for the Pharmacist of the Year Award by Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity at the University of Georgia.Throughout his career he has been active in many state and national pharmacy organizations.  Butch is a member of the First Methodist Church of Swainsboro and has served on its Administrative Board.  He has served three terms as a member of the Swainsboro City Council. He also served two terms as a member of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and served one year as its chairman.

The University Of Georgia College Of Pharmacy has awarded Butch the Distinguished Alumni Award. Butch has received the Wyeth Ayerst Pharmacy Community Service Award. He is a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association.

The Larry J. ‘Butch’ Parrish Technology Center at Southeastern Technical College’s Swainsboro Campus and the Larry J. ‘Butch’ Parrish Parkway connecting U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 80 around Swainsboro, Georgia were each named in honor of Representative Parrish.  He is owner of Parrish Properties, a real estate holding company, and Chairman of Medical Center Pharmacy, Inc. Butch is presently serving his 13th term

AND WAS JUST RE-ELECTED TO HIS 14TH TERM

in the Georgia House of Representatives and represents District 156 which includes Emanuel, Candler and portions of Bulloch and Johnson Counties.

He is Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and Chairman of the Economic Development and Tourism subcommittee of Appropriations. He also serves as a member of the Rules Committee, the Economic Development & Tourism Committee, and the Banks and Banking Committee. In addition, he serves on the One Georgia Authority Overview Committee and the Georgia World Congress Center Overview Committee. He and his wife, Charlotte, have three grown children and seven grandchildren.

Delmus Mosley served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.  After gaining a Degree in Business, Birmingham-Univ. of Alabama; he received a Degree in Divinity and became an ordained minister.  All the while working in Goodyear stores (both Birmingham & Atlanta) as a mechanical technician in assigned auto stalls to help pay his way through school.  This continued while he completed his formalized funeral home operations certification.

Instead of accepting an executive position with Goodyear in their Akron, Ohio headquarters; he decided to return to his hometown of Swainsboro, GA to join his uncle and his dad in their funeral home business.

His emphasis to the students was that you should work hard, striving to be the very best while not speaking ill of your competitors.  Your success comes from the quality and professionalism of your performance on a consistent basis.

Lastly he shared his story on persistence and the Monday – Saturday never-give-up attitude in getting hired in the Goodyear Store.
