Scholar Coffee Chat with Dr. Marla Jaksch

March 24th, 2017 at 1pm in the COE faculty lounge

Dr. Marla Jaksch

Dr. Jaksch will discuss a transnational project, which includes student service-learning and addresses the inclusion of women and local communities in community based STEM initiatives. In many developing countries, large numbers of women die during childbirth because they lack access to health clinics with reliable electricity. To confront this widespread energy poverty in one East African nation, Dr. Marla Jaksch and students in her Gender and Development in Tanzania class delivered and installed solar suitcases to off-grid medical and health facilities. The suitcases are collaboratively built with women in local communities resources.
